Super Smash Bros Ultimate Direct
Super Smash Bros director Masahiro Sakurai dropped a load of new information for the game during Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros Ultimate Direct on Wednesday. During the Direct we got information on new characters, stages, music and modes, some of which left fans very excited indeed.
Simon Belmont and King K. Rool both got great CGI trailers to announce their inclusion in Ultimate. Both of these characters have long been requested by fans so makes sense that they would be added however it is still good to see.
Richter Belmont, Chrom and Dark Samus also got announced as Echo fighters to help bring the total character count to 67!
Stages and Music
A number of stages were shown off during the Direct including Pokémon Stadium, Brinstar Depths and New Donk City Hall. It was also revealed that classic 64 stages will favour a retro look over a remade, polished look.
The total number of stages was also shown and it is a whopping 103! Each of these can also be played in Battlefield and Omega modes and all of them will be available from the start.
A new Stage Morph was also shown off that allows players to choose two stages and then during the match the stage will morph from one to the other seamlessly.
If you thought the stage count was high then the music count will blow your mind. Sakurai revealed that there is over 800 tracks in the game and over 900 if you include music and fan fairs.
The songs will now be organised by series instead of stage and now any song from that series can be played during a corresponding stage.
Players can also create custom playlists and use their Switch as a music player when in portable mode where the screen will then go off to save battery and prevent input.
Modes and Rules
Custom rule sets can now be configured and saved to allow players to return to their favourite set ups. As well as that Stamina Battles are now a standard option. Sudden Death is also available where players start with 300% damage while the camera slowly zooms in to add the drama.
A chargeable Final Smash meter can now be turned on to allow players to perform a weaker Final Smash when the meter is full.
Squad Strike has been added which allows 3 vs 3 or 5 vs 5 battles where players can choose a set number of characters to take into battle.
Tourney Mode will allow custom tournaments to be created with up to 32 fighters. Players can choose the amount of real players and CPU characters which will then be bracketed out for the tournament.
Smash Down is a new mode where players will battle it out and after being used a character can not be selected again. Forcing players to use different characters throughout matches.
A Training mode will be included to allow for practicing with each character. The stage will include a grid background to measure launch distance at various damage percentages.
Classic Mode is included and will see you fight against specific characters within stages that are custom chosen to match your character choice.
A final mode was teased to be revealed at a later date and many are speculating that it will be some form of single player story mode to act as the main way to unlock fighters.
Luigi was also seen being killed during the Simon Belmont trailer however Nintendo has since confirmed that he is ok!
So that was the Super Smash Bros Ultimate Direct. What are your thoughts and are you excited for the game?
