IGN Stands Firm Over Dead Cells Plagiarism
On Monday the review embargo for Dead Cells lifted and IGN posted their written and video review from editor Filip Miucin. What followed however was not what IGN would have hoped for.
Boomstick Gaming, a relatively small gaming YouTube channel uploaded a video claiming that IGN had copied their review of Dead Cells, which had posted on July 24 based off of the early access build.
In the video Boomstick Gaming outlined multiple similarities between their review and the review from Miucin. Throughout there were words and phrases used in a very similar structure which strongly suggested that Filip Miucin had indeed copied Boomstick Gaming’s review and used it as his own.
Once this had come to light IGN reacted swiftly but removing both the video and written review from their sites and gave the following statement
As a group of writers and creators who value our own work and that of others in our field, the editorial staff of IGN takes plagiarism very seriously. In light of concerns that have been raised about our Dead Cells review, we’ve removed it for the time being and are investigating.
IGN has since concluded that the plagiarism allegations were true and they have parted ways with Filip Miucin. They have released the following statement on Twitter as well as their Dead Cells review page.
IGN handled this situation brilliantly with a swift resolution and it is unfortunate that one of their editors felt like they had to plagiarise someone elses work, especially one of a smaller independent site.
Personally I don’t think IGN was to blame at all for the review as they must surely trust their editors and it would be impossible to check every review against all videos and articles on the internet.
Their response has been firm and heartfelt enough that they deserve credit for managing a situation that must have been extremely difficult for all involved.
IGN Manager Peer Schneider also gave a follow-up statement on Twitter regarding compensating Boomstick Gaming.
It is great to hear that IGN are looking to support Boomstick Gaming after all of this and although it is never good to have your work stolen they have certainly gathered a lot more attention after all of this.
Do you think IGN handled this situation well? Let me know in the comments.
