James Gunn fired by Disney
James Gunn has been fired by Disney in the wake of offensive and inappropriate tweets being discovered on his Twitter.
The Guardians of the Galaxy director was in the process of working on the third film in the trilogy when conservative personalities uncovered tweets joking about rape and pedophilia dating back from 2008 and 2009.
The tweets are available to find on the internet and do not paint the director in a good light regardless of their joking nature.
Normally I would be defensive of an individual being fired for comments previously made, especially before being employed by their current employer, but with Disney being such a high-profile studio these comments must completely contradict their corporate policy and be inexcusable.
Disney is not without fault however. They should have done a full check on Gunn’s history before bringing him onboard and if they didn’t then it’s likely something they will be addressing.
Gunn issued a statement on friday.
My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative, I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.
Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all.
It is unfortunate that Gunn has been let go due to these decade old comments however after reading them it is understandable from Disney’s perspective. James Gunn is a very talented director and will surely be successful going forward. Questions over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will swirl now but if Disney and Marvel have proved anything it’s that they can handle these set backs.
