Nintendo – E3 Spotlight Review 2017
Nintendo rounded off the conferences at E3 with their 25 minute, pre recorded Spotlight. Every company presenting at E3 has a point to prove but heading into E3 Nintendo had a lot of weight on their shoulders. The Switch has got off to a fantastic start, exceeding the expectations in terms of sales and reception. With The Legend of Zelda: Breat of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe pushing the Switch to its current highs it was down to Nintendo to showcase what’s next for their latest platform.
Below I will outline all of Nintendos biggest announcements and review their overall Spotlight with a score out of 10.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
The first game Nintendo showed off via a new trailer was Xenoblade Chronicles 2. This action JRPG game looks to bring the hugely popular genre to the Switch in big way with smooth gameplay, a beautiful art style and a massive vast locations to explore.
Fans of the series and the genre will surely be excited to see how impressive this game looks and from what we have seen so far it could become another huge hit for the Switch this year.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will be released Winter 2017.
Nintendo is famous for fun and colorful games and Kirby looks to be no exception. This adorable side scrolling action game will see you travel trough vibrant worlds either alone or with up to 3 friends. With a wide range of attacking options including being able to convert enemies to join your team it looks sure to provide the fun factor that Nintendo prides itself on.
Kirby will be released in 2018.
Tsunekazu Ishihara from the Pokémon Company then provided an update to Pokken Tournement DX releasing this year. This version of the game will provide all the same features found in the Wii U version along with added fighters.
The big news to come from this update though wasn’t Pokken. Mr Ishihara confirmed what everyone had been hoping for. Game Freak are indeed working on the next core installment in the RPG Pokémon series and it will be coming to the Nintendo Switch.
This is huge news for the Switch as Pokémon is one of the biggest franchises on the planet and even more significantly this will be the first time that a core Pokémon title appears on a home console. Every installment previous has been exclusive to portable consoles and though the Switch can be used portably its increased power could mean that massive improvements could be coming to the series.
Pokken Tournement DX will be released September 22 2017.
Pokémon Switch currently has no release window.
Metroid Prime 4
Nintendo was done there with the blockbuster announcements and they continued their Spotlight with arguably the biggest announcement of E3, Metroid Prime 4 is coming to the Nintendo Switch.
A game that many Nintendo fans have been praying for for years is finally happening as Nintendo released a teaser trailer to announce that Metroid Prime 4 is now in development.
Obviously no further details were revealed about the game but the fact it officially exists sent Nintendo fans into a frenzy and undoubtably will help raise the profile of the Switch even higher.
Kirby wasnt the only side scrolling adventure game that Nintendo showed off. Yoshi followed its Kirby in proving that colorful fun will live on the switch with a game looking as adorable as you’d expect. Yoshi takes the form of a woolen toy in this trailer as he explores a 2.5D cardboard world not too unfamiliar looking from Little Big Planet.
Nintendo is the king of this style of game and so along side Kirby, Yoshi is bound to provide fun and enjoyment for all ages on the Switch.
Yoshi will be released in 2018.
The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
As shown in the Bethesda conference Link will be coming to the Nintendo Switch version of Skyrim as well as support for Breath Of The Wild Amiibo.
That wasn’t the only new information the Nintendo had about Zelda though. In the Spotlight Nintendo Showed off content from both of Breath Of The Wild’s DLC packs coming this year.
Pack one titled ‘The Master Trials’ will contain a new Trials of the Sword challenge mode, a hard mode, Hero’s Path, travel medallion and new Armour.
Pack two titled ‘The Champions’ Ballard’ will feature a new dungeon, an original story and even more challenges.
All this addition content will help add to the already world class experience found in Breath Of The Wild.
Pack one will be released on June 30 2017.
Pack two will be released Holidays 2017 along side 4 brand new Breath Of The Wild Amiibo representing the 4 champions seen in the game.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Following up from its reveal at the Ubisoft conference we got to see another look at Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, one of the surprise stand outs from Ubisoft’s show and a game that I think will become a huge hit when it releases on the Switch.
Be sure to check my review of Ubisoft’s conference for more info on Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle will be released August 29 2017.
One of the stand out announcements from Nintendo’s Spotlight was that the hugely popular Rocket League is heading to the Nintendo Switch. This fun, fast paced car football game has grown and grown in popularity since its launch and is currently one of the biggest indie games out there. Its fast paced multiplayer focused gameplay is perfect for the Switch and I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes a stand out for the system with its Switch exclusive content and cross play with other platforms.
Rocket League will be released Holidays 2017.
Super Mario Odyssey
The crown jewel of Nintendo’s 2017 E3 Spotlight was undoubtably Super Marion Odyssey. This beautiful 3D platformer will see you take control of Mario as he explored stunning new worlds and challenges. To help Mario you will also be able to use his hat as a weapon. That’s right Mario’s hat, aka Cappy, can now be thrown to provide new attack options as well as platforming ones. Beyond attacking enemies Mario can now use Cappy to posses them too. Adding even more new mechanics to the long standing franchise.
With what Nintendo showed Mario looks to be walking similar steps to Link in The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild in that he is taking what people know, shaking it all up and returning it in a incredibly fresh and exciting product. If Mario turns out anywhere near as good as Breath Of The Wild then Super Mario Odyssey could be a real contender for game of the year…..if not series.
Super Mario Odyssey will be released October 27 2017.
Nintendo smashed it! In 25 minutes they showed why the Switch is a real contender in the console market this year and going forward. With great game after great game as well as a few jaw dropping announcements they well and truly ticked every box and likely sent everyone away speechless and with a huge smile on their faces.
Reviewing Nintendo’s E3 Spotlight 2017 I cant give them any other score other than
